Character AI Subscription Cost: Pricing, Plans and Is It Worth It?

A Character AI subscription costs $9.99 a month for Character.AI+, or $94.99 a year, which is about $7.92 a month. Character.AI Lite is listed at $2.49 and $4.99. What none of those tiers buy is memory, and the free tier now carries ads. Here is every listed price and who should actually pay.

A Character AI subscription costs $9.99 a month for Character.AI+, or $94.99 for a year, which works out at about $7.92 a month. A cheaper Character.AI Lite tier is listed at $2.49 and $4.99. The free tier still exists and now carries advertising, which Character.AI confirmed itself in a reply to a reviewer. What none of those tiers buy is memory: Character.AI does not sell persistent memory at any price, and that is the single most common reason people cancel.

Character.AI publishes no pricing page. Both character.ai/pricing and character.ai/plans return 404, so the US App Store listing is the only place a prospective customer can read what they would actually pay. Everything below is read from that listing, and where a number is our arithmetic rather than Apple's we say so.

How much is a Character AI subscription?

Character.AI+ is listed at $9.99 and $94.99, and Character.AI Lite at $2.49 and $4.99. Charms, the in-app currency, run from $0.99 to $99.99. Apple lists in-app purchase names and prices but never billing periods, so the monthly and annual mapping below follows the listing convention rather than a published plan page.

In-app purchase Listed price Effective monthly What it appears to be
Character.AI+$9.99$9.99The main paid tier, billed monthly
Character.AI+$94.99$7.92The annual entry, saving about $24.89 a year
Character.AI Lite$4.99$4.99A reduced tier below Plus
Character.AI Lite$2.49$2.49The cheapest recurring item listed
Charms$0.99 to $99.99One offConsumable in-app currency, bought in packs

Listed prices were read from the Character AI: Chat, Talk, Text listing on the US App Store, published by Character Technologies, Inc., on 29 August 2026. The effective monthly column is our arithmetic. On Google Play the same app shows an in-app purchase range of $0.99 to $99.99, which is consistent. Prices change without notice, so check the listing before you subscribe.

Is Character AI free?

Yes, and it is likely to stay free, but the free tier now shows ads and applies rate limits. That is not a rumor. Replying to a Play reviewer complaining about advertising on 7 February 2026, Character.AI wrote that it had added ads to keep Character.ai free while improving the experience, and that it was working to ensure they would not disrupt chats. The company put it on the record itself.

The rate limits are the other half of the free experience. Character.AI does not publish a hard message number, and the ceilings have moved over time, so any specific figure you find in an older post is probably stale. What paying changes is queue priority and waiting, not the fundamental shape of the product.

What does a Character AI subscription actually buy?

Faster responses, priority access when the servers are busy, early access to new features, and relief from the free tier's advertising and waiting. That is a real improvement if your complaint is speed. It is not an improvement if your complaint is that the bot forgot your name.

This is the part worth being blunt about, because it is where most people feel misled. Character.AI does not sell persistent long-term memory as a feature at any tier. There is no $9.99 upgrade that makes a character remember your job, your sister or last week's argument. If forgetting is what is frustrating you, no amount of money spent inside Character.AI will fix it, and the honest move is to look at an app like Character AI that treats memory as the product rather than a perk.

Why is Character AI asking for my ID?

Because its age assurance system could not confirm you are over 18 from its other signals. This matters for a pricing article because it now decides whether you can subscribe at all. In its own announcement, Character.AI said it was removing the ability for users under 18 to engage in open-ended chat, with the change taking effect no later than 25 November, and that it would roll out age assurance combining its in-house model with leading third-party tools including Persona.

In practice that is usually a selfie check. An ID upload is the fallback when the selfie is inconclusive, and it is handled by Persona rather than by Character.AI. If you are under 18, a paid tier does not restore open-ended chat, so there is no version of this subscription worth buying.

Is Character AI Plus worth it?

At $9.99 a month it is worth it for one specific person: a heavy user of the character library who is losing time to queues and is annoyed by ads. For that person the annual item at $94.99 is the better buy, because $7.92 a month is the cheapest serious tier in this whole category.

For everyone else the answer is probably no, and the app's own reception is the evidence. On Google Play, Character.AI holds 2.1 stars, and 1,572,414 of its 2,429,807 ratings are one star, close to two thirds of everyone who has ever rated it, checked on 1 September 2026. That sits alongside a 4.28 rating from 555,397 ratings on the US App Store. A gap that wide between two stores for the same app is unusual, and it tracks the timing of the under-18 restrictions and the arrival of ads.

How Character AI pricing compares

Against the rest of the category, Character.AI is cheap. The catch is what the cheap price includes, and in two cases whether you can buy the app at all.

App Entry price Long-term memory Ads
Character.AI$2.49 Lite, $9.99 PlusNot sold at any tierYes
PolyBuzz$9.90 a monthPermanent memory on Ultimate, $29.90Yes
Chai$9.99 PremiumGated to Ultra, $29.99Yes
Nomi$9.99 Launch PlanYes, the deepest in the categoryNo
Replika$7.99 a monthImproves with the paid tierNo
Kindroid$15.99 a monthYes, editable and layeredNo
TalkieNo published pricesFades on long chatsYes
Darlings$9 a month, free demoIncluded on every planNo

Competitor figures come from each app's US App Store listing, last read between 25 and 29 August 2026. Talkie has not been listed on the US App Store since December 2024 and publishes no plan prices anywhere, which is why its row has no number. Our full workings, including the annual maths for each app, are in the AI companion cost breakdown, and the most expensive plan in the category is picked apart in our Kindroid pricing guide.

How do I cancel a Character AI subscription?

Through the store you bought it from, not through Character.AI. On an iPhone that is Settings, your name, Subscriptions. On Android it is the Play Store, your profile picture, Payments and subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel anything, which is the mistake that generates most of the surprise charges in this category.

That is worth a moment of attention across the whole category, not just here. Two of the biggest apps people compare against Character.AI publish no plan prices at all, on their own sites or on any store page, so the first time you learn what a tier costs is when the charge lands on your statement. If you subscribe to a lot of small services, having something that flags an unexpected recurring charge the day it hits is a more reliable defense than remembering every renewal date yourself.

Who should skip it

Skip the subscription if you are under 18, because it does not restore open-ended chat. Skip it if your problem is that characters forget you, because memory is not for sale here at any price. Skip it if the ads are the reason you are here and you would rather not fund the thing that annoyed you.

Pay for it if you use the character library heavily, you are over 18 and verified, and queueing is your real complaint. In that narrow case $94.99 a year is genuinely good value against a category where $15.99 a month is normal.

If what you actually wanted was one companion who keeps your story instead of a library that resets, that is a different product and worth comparing directly. We put the honest side-by-side on our Character AI alternative page, and the full ranked field on apps like Character AI. If memory is the whole point for you, start with an AI friend that remembers you and judge it on whether it still knows you in a month.
