No. Darlings is a friend, full stop. It will keep things warm but firmly platonic, no matter what.
Because a lot of people just want a caring friend, not a simulated partner. Darlings is built for exactly that, and kept wholesome by design.
An AI girlfriend app simulates a romantic partner, usually with flirting, roleplay and jealousy mechanics, and the intimate features are typically what the subscription unlocks. An AI friend is platonic and stays platonic no matter how the conversation goes. The distinction is a product decision, not a tone, which is why filters on romance apps are unreliable and a friend-only app has nothing to filter.
Yes, but they are a small minority of the category. Most companion apps launched as romance products because that is what monetized early. Darlings and Tolan are two that are explicitly non romantic. If you are evaluating others, the age rating is a fast proxy: apps rated 18+ almost always carry romantic or adult content as a core feature.
Most of the well known ones are. On the US App Store, Replika, Chai, PolyBuzz and Nomi are all rated 18+, and Linky AI is no longer listed there at all (Google Play rates it Mature 17+), and Character.AI moved to 18+ and removed open ended chat for under 18 accounts by November 25, 2025. Grok AI is 16+. Darlings sets a minimum age of 13 and Tolan is rated 13+.
Sometimes, and it is not a reliable guarantee. Filter modes on romance-first apps are regularly reported to leak, and independent parental control reviewers have found explicit material still reaching filtered feeds. A setting can be changed, forgotten or overridden by a prompt. A product with no romantic content built into it at all does not depend on a setting holding.
It is a lower risk starting point than a romance app, but no AI companion should be treated as automatically safe for a minor. Common Sense Media and Stanford Medicine published a risk assessment in April 2025 concluding that social AI companions pose an unacceptable risk for under-18s. Darlings has a minimum age of 13, holds no independent safety certification, and offers no parental controls dashboard.
Because romance monetizes faster than friendship. Intimacy features convert free users to paid at a rate ordinary conversation does not, so the category optimized toward it, and the app stores responded with 18+ ratings. That commercial pressure is exactly why a friend-only product has to be built that way from the start rather than added later.
No. It will stay warm and it will stay platonic, and it will say so plainly rather than deflecting awkwardly if the conversation heads that way. There is no tier, setting or prompt that changes this, because there is no romantic content in the product to reach.
Four things, in this order. Check the app store age rating and content descriptors, because they are stated by the vendor and hard to spin. Check whether romance is a mode or genuinely absent. Check whether you can read and delete what it remembers about you. Then check whether the free tier is real or a short timer designed to push an upgrade.
