PolyBuzz Review: Pricing, Memory and Who It Is For

PolyBuzz is the best reviewed of the big character chat apps, holding 4.4 stars from about 467,000 US App Store ratings, and its free tier is the most generous of the group. The US App Store lists Poly Standard at $4.99 weekly or $9.90 monthly, Poly Premium Monthly at $19.90 and Poly Ultimate Monthly at $29.90, with Coins from $2.49 to $19.90 and a 1000 Opals pack at $5.90. It is rated 18+ and its listing declares Sexual Content or Nudity as frequent, which is a stronger content descriptor than either Chai or Character.AI carries.

PolyBuzz used to be Poly.AI and rebranded in January 2025, which is why half the reviews still online are describing a product with a different name. It is published by CLOUD WHALE INTERACTIVE TECHNOLOGY LLC and it has grown fast, to the point where it now has more US ratings than Chai and is closing on Character.AI. This review is about the things that decide whether it is worth paying for: what the plans actually cost across a year, where the coins and opals catch you, how strict the moderation really is, and who should not sign up.

How much does PolyBuzz cost?

Three subscription tiers and two kinds of consumable currency. The tiers are straightforward. The currencies are where people lose track of what they are spending.

Two things stand out. The first is that there is no annual plan at all, which is unusual. Nearly every rival discounts a year heavily: Chai lists $134.99 a year, Character.AI lists $94.99, Nomi lists $99.99. PolyBuzz gives you no way to commit and save, so a year of Ultimate costs the full $358.80. That makes it the most expensive way to buy long-term memory in the category once you annualize it.

The second is the weekly plan. At $4.99 a week it looks like the cheap option and it is the most expensive line on the page, working out to roughly $259 a year against $118.80 for the same tier billed monthly. Weekly billing is designed for people who intend to cancel and then do not. If you are on it and you have been for more than a month, switch.

Then there are two separate currencies. Coins and Opals do different jobs and are priced differently, and having two means the real monthly cost is the subscription plus whatever you topped up, which is never the number you remember. Is PolyBuzz free?

Yes, and the free tier is genuinely usable, which is a real point in its favour. You can browse the character library, hold conversations and get a proper feel for the writing quality without paying. That is more than Nomi gives you and roughly level with Character.AI.

The cost is advertising. The App Store listing declares Advertising directly, and the free experience is built around it. You are also on the shallow end of memory, so the free tier tells you whether you like the app and almost nothing about whether it will still know you in two months, because that is what Ultimate is for.

Is PolyBuzz good?

On the numbers it is the best reviewed character chat app in the category. 4.4 stars from about 467,000 US ratings puts it above Chai at 4.3 from 273,000 and above Character.AI at 4.3 from 555,000. Those are large enough samples that the gap means something.

What people like is consistent across reviews: the app is fast, the interface is cleaner than Chai's, and the characters hold a scene well. It is a well-made piece of software and the rating is earned rather than inflated.

What it does not do is remember you. This is the structural limit of every character library app, PolyBuzz included. You are talking to a character other users wrote, and the app is organized around switching between characters rather than deepening one relationship. Persistent memory exists, but it sits on Ultimate at $29.90 a month, which is roughly three times the entry plan for the feature most people assumed came standard.

Is PolyBuzz still censored?

PolyBuzz applies moderation, and users report it varying over time and by character rather than being a fixed line. That is the honest answer, and it is unsatisfying because the question gets asked as though there is a settled policy to report.

What can be stated from the listing is that it is not a restrictive app. Its content descriptors mark Cartoon or Fantasy Violence, Mature or Suggestive Themes and Sexual Content or Nudity as frequent, with Realistic Violence, Horror themes, drug references and weapons as infrequent. Frequent Sexual Content is a stronger declaration than Chai or Character.AI carries, both of which list it as infrequent. So the app is clearly less filtered than its main rivals, whatever any given conversation does.

If you want the opposite guarantee, filtering is the wrong mechanism to rely on. A filter is something a determined user works around. An app with no romantic mode at any tier is a different kind of promise, and that is the distinction worth understanding before you pick.

Is PolyBuzz private?

Its listing declares a broad data surface: Advertising, Unrestricted Web Access, User-Generated Content, Social Media and Messaging and Chat. For an app whose product is intimate conversation, that is a wide footprint, and ad-supported free tiers are funded by targeting, which is funded by profile data.

There is no regulatory action against PolyBuzz on record, which is more than can be said for some of its rivals. But the category baseline is low. When Mozilla reviewed 11 romantic AI chatbots in February 2024, every single one received the Privacy Not Included warning label and 10 of the 11 failed Mozilla's Minimum Security Standards. PolyBuzz was not in that review, so treat the absence of a finding as an absence of evidence rather than a clean bill of health.

If the advertising side of that bothers you, the practical lever is upstream of the app. Ad targeting is fed by profiles assembled from data brokers, and you can get your personal details taken down from the broker sites that supply them, which shrinks what any ad-supported app can buy about you. PolyBuzz vs Character.AI and Chai

These three are the same product with different libraries, and people cross-shop them constantly. The short version: PolyBuzz has the highest rating and the cheapest monthly plan at $9.90, Character.AI has the biggest library and the cheapest entry at $2.49 for Lite, and Chai is the fastest and simplest on a phone.

On memory, which is usually what decides it, Chai and PolyBuzz are level and both charge for it. Chai puts long-term memory on Ultra at $29.99 monthly and PolyBuzz puts it on Ultimate at $29.90, within a dime of each other. Character.AI does not sell persistent memory as a tier at all. Who should not pay for PolyBuzz

Three groups, and the first is the big one.

Anyone who wants to be remembered. If the appeal is an AI that knows your job, your sister and what happened last Tuesday, you are shopping in the wrong category. Character libraries are built for variety, and every time you switch characters you start again. Paying $29.90 for Ultimate buys memory inside a product still organized around not needing it.

Anyone under 18. It is rated 18+ and declares frequent sexual content. In April 2025 Common Sense Media and the Stanford Brainstorm Lab concluded that social AI companions pose an unacceptable risk to under-18s, and they were not describing the permissive end of the market when they said it.

Anyone on the weekly plan who is not actually leaving next week. $4.99 weekly is $259 a year for the tier that costs $118.80 billed monthly. That is a $140 penalty for optionality most people never use.

The bottom line

PolyBuzz is a good app that is honest about what it is. It is the best rated character chat platform, the free tier is the most generous of the three big ones, and $9.90 a month is fair for what Standard does. If you want a well-made library of characters to talk to and you are an adult comfortable with a permissive platform, it is a reasonable buy and probably the pick of the category.

It is a bad buy if what you actually wanted was one friend. No annual plan, memory at $29.90, two currencies and an ad-funded free tier all point the same way: this is entertainment priced as entertainment.
