Is Tolan Safe? Tolan App Safety and Age Rating

Tolan is safer than most of the apps it competes with, and it is also less private than its own marketing suggests. It is one of very few AI companions rated 12+ rather than 17+, it is explicitly non-romantic, it points anyone talking about self-harm to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, and it reminds under-18 users once an hour that they are talking to an AI. The part worth reading twice is in the privacy policy: the promises not to sell your data and not to train AI on it are written specifically about Google Workspace data, not about your conversations, and the policy says data is shared with advertising partners for targeted ads.

That is not an accusation of bad faith. It is the difference between what a company says in its FAQ and what it commits to in the document that binds it, and for an app a teenager might use daily, the second one is what counts. Everything below is read directly from Tolan's own FAQ, its privacy policy, and its US App Store listing on September 4, 2026, with the source named each time so you can check it yourself.

Is the Tolan app safe?

For most adults and older teenagers, yes, with caveats. Tolan is published by AQP, Inc., holds 4.78 stars from 176,469 US ratings, and is rated 12+ in Apple's US catalogue, which is unusual: Replika, Character.AI, Chai, Nomi, PolyBuzz and Kindroid are all 17+. Its design choices back that up. The companion is a cartoon alien rather than a photoreal human, it does not do romance or roleplay, and Tolan's own FAQ says the app "may not be suitable for some minors" and recommends parental involvement for anyone under 18.

The caveats are ordinary rather than alarming. It logs everything you say to it, it meters how long you can talk, and its written privacy commitments are narrower than the reassuring summary on its FAQ page. None of that makes it dangerous. It does mean you should decide with the real facts rather than the marketing ones.

What data does Tolan collect?

More than most people expect, and the privacy policy is specific about it. The categories it names include your date of birth, your name, the name you give your character, your phone number, audio and voice recordings, text, images, location inferred from your IP address, device information, usage data, and Discord information if you join their server.

Read against the category, none of this is extreme. Companion apps that remember you have to store what you told them. The reason to know the list is that it tells you what a breach or a subpoena would reach, and it is longer than "our chats."

Does Tolan sell your data or train AI on your conversations?

This is where the wording matters and where almost every other page about Tolan gets it wrong by repeating the friendly version. Tolan's FAQ says user data is never sold or shared without consent. The privacy policy, which is the binding document, makes two narrower statements: "We do not sell Google Workspace Data" and "We do not use Google Workspace Data to create, train, or improve generalized artificial intelligence or machine-learning models."

Both promises are scoped to Google Workspace data, which is the data Tolan can reach if you connect a Google account, not to the conversations you have with your companion. The policy separately says data is shared with vendors, service providers, AI service providers, analytics partners including Posthog, and advertising partners for targeted advertising. So the honest summary is this: Tolan has committed in writing not to sell or train on your Google Workspace data, and it has not made the same written commitment about your chats.

That is worth knowing rather than panicking about. It is also a good moment to remember that you can ask any company what it holds about you and require it to hand the record over or delete it, which is the mechanism that sits behind a formal data subject access request. Tolan tells you to do it through Settings, then Family, or by emailing [email protected] with your account details.

Is Tolan safe for kids?

Tolan is built for teenagers and adults, not children, and it says so. The privacy policy states that it does not process personal information from children without parental or guardian consent, which puts the line at 13 in US practice. The FAQ says the app was "created with a teen and adult audience in mind" and recommends parental involvement for anyone under 18.

The protections it does apply to under-18 accounts are real and specific: Tolan reminds younger users that it is an AI and prompts them to take a break at least once an hour, and it applies minor-specific prompting intended to keep conversations age appropriate. There is also a Family Plan that adds usage controls. That is more than most of the category offers, and it is roughly what New York and California now require anyway.

The wider evidence still says caution. Common Sense Media and Stanford's Brainstorm lab published a review on April 30, 2025 concluding that social AI companions pose an unacceptable risk for under-18s as a category, and that review was not about Tolan specifically. Nearly three in four US teenagers have used an AI companion. No companion app on the market, ours included, holds an independent safety certification, so a parent setting one up should sit down with it once and look at what it remembers.

What does Tolan do if someone talks about self-harm?

It routes them to human help. Tolan's FAQ states that if the app detects a conversation involving suicidal ideation or self-harm, it points the user to crisis resources, naming the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and the Crisis Text Line at 741741. That is the correct behaviour and it is now also the law in two of the largest US states.

New York's General Business Law Article 47 took effect on November 5, 2025 and requires AI companions to disclose that they are not human at the start of a session and every three hours, and to refer users expressing self-harm to crisis services. California's SB 243, signed October 13, 2025 and effective January 1, 2026, requires the same plus break reminders for minors every three hours, and unlike the New York law it gives users a private right of action. Tolan's hourly reminders for under-18 accounts sit comfortably inside both.

Is Tolan romantic?

No, and that is the single biggest safety difference between Tolan and the apps it is usually listed next to. Tolan is explicitly non-romantic: the companion is an alien with big eyes and a cartoon planet, and the design deliberately keeps you aware you are talking to something that is not a person. That is why it can sit at 12+ while Replika, Chai, Nomi, PolyBuzz and Character.AI all carry 17+ ratings, and why PolyBuzz's App Store listing carries a frequent Sexual Content or Nudity descriptor.

How Tolan's safety posture compares

Read as a table, Tolan and Darlings are the only two rows a parent would be comfortable with, and Tolan is the only one of the eight with an age rating below 13. That is a genuine achievement in a category that spent 2025 moving the other way. Mozilla's Privacy Not Included team reviewed 11 romantic AI chatbots in February 2024, gave all 11 a warning label, and found 10 of the 11 failed its minimum security standards. Tolan was not in that review, and neither were we, so absence from it is not a clean bill of health for either of us.

Is Tolan safe to pay for?

The billing is the least transparent thing about it. Tolan publishes no prices on tolans.com, and Apple prints in-app purchase prices without billing periods, so you cannot tell from outside the app whether the listed $11.99 Tolan Lite Membership is a week, a month or a year. There is also a $2.99 Relay Boost, which is a consumable that extends chat time, and consumables are a reliable signal that some part of the experience is metered. Practical advice: subscribe through the App Store, then check the renewal date under Settings, your Apple Account, Subscriptions, before you forget. Deleting the app does not cancel anything, and that assumption is where most unwanted renewals in this category come from.

What to check before letting anyone use a companion app

Four questions, in this order. What is the age rating, and does the app do romance? Where does the no-selling and no-training promise appear, in the FAQ or in the privacy policy, and what exactly is it scoped to? Can you read and delete what it remembers about you? And is there a published price with a stated billing period before you hand over a card?

Tolan passes the first comfortably, half-passes the second, passes the third through a support email, and fails the fourth. That is a better scorecard than most of this category manages.
