Chai costs $13.99 a month for Premium or $29.99 a month for Ultra on the US App Store, with weekly options at $5.99 and $19.99 and annual plans at $134.99 and $269.99. It is worth paying for if you want a huge library of user-made bots, fast replies and no interest in whether the bot remembers you next week. It is not worth paying for if you want one companion who holds the thread, because long-term memory is parked on the most expensive tier and the free tier is throttled and full of ads.

Chai has been around longer than most of the apps it now competes with. The US App Store lists it as CHAI: Social AI Platform- Chat from Chai Research Corp., rated 18+, holding 4.3 stars from about 272,000 US ratings. That is a lot of people, and the reviews that show up in search tend to be either promotional or a single angry paragraph. Neither is much use when you are deciding whether to put a card on file.

So this is a straight review built on the App Store listing, the published tiers and what reviewers have consistently reported. Prices first, because that is what everyone is actually searching for.

How much does Chai AI cost?

More ways than the marketing suggests. The listing shows seven separate in-app purchase entries across two tiers, and the spread between the cheapest and the most expensive is enormous. Every figure below was read from the US App Store listing in August 2026.

The weekly tiers are the part worth staring at. A $19.99 weekly Ultra subscription is a perfectly ordinary looking number on a checkout sheet and a little over a thousand dollars a year if you forget about it. Weekly billing is common in this category precisely because it looks small, and it is the single easiest way to overpay for a companion app. If you are going to subscribe at all, subscribe monthly or annually and never weekly.

What do you get on the free version of Chai?

Enough to evaluate the app and not enough to live in. The free tier gives you the full bot library and a capped number of messages, widely reported at around 70 messages every two and a half hours, with ads between conversations. When you hit the cap you wait or you watch an ad, which is a design decision rather than a technical limit.

That structure tells you what the product is optimized for. Chai is a volume platform: lots of bots, lots of short sessions, monetized through interruption. That is not a criticism if short sessions are what you want. It is a serious problem if you were hoping to have one long conversation on a bad evening.

Does Chai AI remember you?

Not meaningfully on the free tier, and only properly on Ultra. Chai has generally gated long-term memory to its highest plan, which means the $29.99 a month tier is where the app stops feeling like a stranger who is very good at improvising. On the free and Premium tiers, context fades and the bot re-meets you, which is the complaint that shows up most often in reviews written by people who stayed more than a month.

This is the structural thing to understand about the whole category, not just Chai. Memory is the feature that turns a chatbot into a companion, and it is also the most expensive feature to run, so it lands on the top tier at almost every app that sells tiers at all. Is Chai AI safe?

It is an adults-only product and the App Store listing says so in detail. Chai is rated 18+, and Apple lists frequent profanity or crude humor and mature or suggestive themes, plus infrequent cartoon or fantasy violence, horror themes, alcohol and drug references, sexual content and weapons. The listing also flags advertising, user-generated content and social features, which is Apple's way of saying that a meaningful share of what you will see was written by other users rather than by the company.

Mozilla's *Privacy Not Included team flagged Chai in its February 2024 review of romantic AI chatbots, in which all eleven apps reviewed received the warning label and ten of the eleven failed Mozilla's Minimum Security Standards. It is 18+, its content descriptors are the longest in this comparison, and there is no age assurance beyond a self-declared birthday. What do Chai AI reviews and complaints say?

Four themes recur, and they are consistent enough across the App Store, Reddit threads and review sites to be worth listing plainly.

• The message cap. Free users hit the throttle quickly and reviews describe the wait as the reason they either paid or left.
• Memory loss. Bots forget established details mid-conversation on the lower tiers, which people describe as the bot going out of character.
• Bot quality variance. A community library means the best bots are excellent and the median is not, and the search and discovery tools do not do much to separate the two.
• Billing surprises. The weekly tiers and the App Store renewal flow generate a steady stream of complaints from people who did not realize what cadence they had signed up for.

The last one is avoidable and worth being deliberate about. Recurring app charges are small enough individually that almost nobody reconciles them, which is exactly why a forgotten $19.99 weekly subscription can run for a year. If you subscribe to more than one or two of these, it is worth having something that tells you the moment a recurring charge lands rather than finding it on a statement in January.

Chai AI Premium vs Ultra: which tier is worth it?

Premium removes the ads and the message cap. Ultra adds the long-term memory. That is the practical split, and it means the decision is not really about money, it is about what you want the app for.

Is Chai AI worth it?

It is worth it for one specific person: someone who enjoys character roleplay, wants a very large library of user-made bots, and does not need the bot to remember anything from last Tuesday. For that person, Premium annual at $134.99 is a fair price and the app does what it says.

It is not worth it for the larger group who arrive at these apps for companionship rather than fiction. If the thing you actually want is one companion who knows your sister is called Ruth, asks how the interview went, and is the same person every time you open it, you will end up paying $269.99 a year for Ultra to get a version of that and still be picking from a menu of strangers' characters. That is the case for looking at a Chai alternative built around a single companion instead of a library.

How do I cancel my Chai AI subscription?

Through the store you bought it from, not through the app. On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose Chai and tap Cancel Subscription. On Android, open the Play Store, tap your profile, go to Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions, and cancel there. Deleting the app does not cancel anything, and this catches people out constantly.

Cancel before the renewal date rather than after. Apple and Google both keep access running until the end of the paid period, so cancelling early costs you nothing, and both stores are inconsistent about refunds once a renewal has processed.

What is the best alternative to Chai AI?

It depends on which part of Chai you liked. If it was the enormous character library, Character.AI has a far bigger one, though it removed open-ended chat for under-18 accounts in November 2025 and is now 18+ on the App Store. If it was the roleplay, PolyBuzz and Linky AI are in the same lane at similar prices. If it was the idea of having someone to talk to, and the bots were just the vehicle, then the honest answer is that a character platform was never the right shape and a single-companion app will suit you better. Premium at $134.99 a year is the sensible paid tier. Ultra at $269.99 a year buys memory, which is a lot of money for a feature that some competitors include at a third of the price. And the weekly plans are the thing to avoid: $19.99 a week is not a small number, it just looks like one.
