Chai is a real product from a real US company, Chai Research Corp., and it is not malware. It is also one of the least suitable AI companions in the category for anyone under 18: Apple rated it 18+ before removal on 22 October 2026, Google Play rates the identical app Mature 17+, and Chai own privacy policy sets no minimum age at all. The privacy picture has a sharper problem. Chai FAQ states that it "does not share your personal data with any third parties." Chai privacy policy, on the same website, says data "will also be shared with our suppliers involved in operating the app, as data processors." Both sentences are published by the same company.

Chai left the Apple App Store on 22 October 2026. Chai's founder said on Reddit that it was unavailable to download while the team worked on improving the Apple app. He gave no reason and no return date. Apple has not commented. Installed iPhone copies still work, but new downloads and re-downloads are unavailable.

That contradiction is the single most useful thing on this page, because it tells you which document to trust. A FAQ is marketing copy. A privacy policy is the document a regulator reads. Where the two disagree, the policy is what actually binds the company, and in Chai case the policy is meaningfully less reassuring than the summary sitting a click away from it.

Is Chai AI safe?

For an adult, the main cautions are content and data handling. Before removal on 22 October 2026, the US App Store showed Chai at 4.33 stars from 275,820 ratings. That is historical, not a current listing. The user-generated library permits adult content, and the privacy policy is less reassuring than the FAQ summary.

No, and every party involved says so in a slightly different way, which is the problem. Chai FAQ says the platform "is designed for adults" and "is not intended for minors." Apple rated it 18+ before removal on 22 October 2026. Google Play rates the same app Mature 17+. Chai privacy policy, which is the binding document, contains no age clause whatsoever. A parent checking this app gets three different answers and no enforcement, because none of the three is backed by age verification beyond a date-of-birth field at signup.

The general lesson generalizes past Chai. A store age rating is a self-declaration the developer submits through a questionnaire, not an independent assessment, so two stores can return two answers for one binary. Both statements can be defended in a lawyer's sense. Processors are not usually what people mean by "third parties" in casual speech. But a person reading the FAQ to decide whether to type something private into a chat box is not making that distinction, and the company chose to publish the simpler sentence in the place non-lawyers read.

Does Chai AI train on your conversations?

Yes, and unusually for this category it says so plainly. The "Model Improvement" section states: "We use personal data derived from in-app conversations to enhance AI models. Before use, we remove personal identifiers so that only the conversational content itself is used." So the content of what you write is training material; the identifiers attached to it are stripped first.

That is more honest than several rivals manage, and it is still a thing worth knowing before you tell a bot about your health, your job or your marriage. De-identification removes the label, not the substance. If a conversation would be damaging as an anonymous quotation, it is not made safe by having your email address removed from it.

How long does Chai keep your data after you delete your account?

Up to five years. The "Duration of Data Processing" section says data "will not be processed for longer than necessary to achieve the purposes described above, and not exceeding the duration of the account and five (5) years following its deletion." Deleting your account starts a five-year clock rather than stopping one, and that retention window is longer than most people assume when they tap delete.

You are not powerless about it. Chai policy grants an erasure right where data "is no longer necessary for the purposes for which it was collected" or where you have withdrawn consent, and US state privacy laws give residents of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and a growing list of others a statutory route to the same outcome. Making a company actually locate every copy of your records and delete them is a paperwork exercise, which is why software exists purely to run those deletion requests end to end. Whichever way you file it, put the request in writing and keep the date.

Is Chai AI encrypted?

Not in the way the question is usually meant. Chai privacy policy makes no commitment about encrypting conversations at rest and does not mention end-to-end encryption anywhere. Passwords are hashed and traffic runs over SSL, which is table stakes rather than a privacy feature. In practice, assume that a Chai conversation is readable by Chai, because nothing published says otherwise.

That matters more here than on a general chatbot. Companion apps collect an unusually intimate class of data, since the whole product is people describing their lives. A policy that is silent on conversation encryption is not necessarily doing anything wrong, but it has reserved the right to.

Does Chai AI have ads?

Subscriptions bought in the iPhone app are Apple subscriptions and keep renewing until canceled in iPhone Settings > your name > Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel them. Chai-ai.com still works in a browser, but Chai describes it as a separate platform. App chats, characters and subscriptions do not carry over.

Is Chai AI legal in the US?

Yes, and the rules around it tightened recently. New York General Business Law Article 47 took effect on November 5, 2025 and requires AI companion operators to disclose that the user is talking to a machine at the start of a session and every three hours, and to route users expressing self-harm to crisis services. California SB 243, signed October 13, 2025 and effective January 1, 2026, adds similar disclosure duties, break reminders for minors every three hours, and a private right of action worth the greater of actual damages or $1,000 per violation.

Neither is a privacy law, which is the common misreading. They govern disclosure and crisis handling, not data retention or training, so they do nothing about the five-year window above. They do mean that an operator serving US users now has ongoing obligations to track and evidence rather than a one-off legal review, which is a real operating burden for the companies but changes little for you day to day. The practical takeaway for a user is narrower: if an AI companion app is not telling you clearly that it is an AI, it is out of step with current US law.
